Bachelor of Business Administration – emphasis in Accounting, 2010
As a chartered professional accountant (CPA), Greta Wierenga knows firsthand that accounting plays a role in every level of business. It’s one of the reasons she is so passionate about working with clients that range from small non-profit organizations to publicly traded companies.
“I enjoy all the aspects of my job,” says Greta, who graduated with a JR Shaw School of Business Bachelor of Business Administration – emphasis in Accounting in 2010 and is a manager with MNP, one of the largest national accounting and business advisory firms in Canada. “I enjoy going into the office every day. I enjoy the challenge of it. It’s a great career.”
Hands-on, real-world education
Greta says entering the workforce was a very positive experience.
“When I got a job in the accounting field after graduating it clicked right away. It was all very well referenced to what we had learned at NAIT. Everything tied into something we would actually see in the office or on the job,” she says.
Advice to students
"Work hard, keep your grades up and participate in as many extra-curricular activities as you can. The really practical education NAIT provides is invaluable."
"Take every opportunity to network with your fellow students and with your instructors while you’re at school."
Her NAIT instructors’ industry experience made it easy to understand expectations in the accounting field, she says. Practical learning in the classroom also extended into extracurricular activities, such as business competitions where Greta was able to practice her skills under intense deadlines.
Her accounting courses provided Greta with the skill set essential for her career, but a leadership course became a favourite. “It gave me a whole new perspective on working with people and managing others. A lot of what I learned in that course I still apply in my everyday job.”
Making a difference
Greta volunteered with community organizations while at NAIT and continues to give back today, including supporting tax clinics where accountants help prepare tax returns for low-income Albertans.
Before attending NAIT, Greta knew she wanted to be an accountant. It was the right decision as she finds herself in a fulfilling career.
“Accounting is integral to a well-functioning business environment. What we do is allow business owners to understand the numbers behind what they’re doing and succeed and grow their organizations.”
