Medical Terminology, 2015
With a degree in Molecular Biology, Alfreda excels at small details. This specialized scientist has big dreams of working in healthcare. Completing the Medical Terminology course in July fast-tracked her studies into NAIT's Medical Laboratory Technology program.
Alfreda Otieno holds degrees in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Dalhousie University. She is a scientist at heart but wished to use her talents to help people more directly.
Alfreda always imagined a career in healthcare. She had aspirations of becoming a doctor, but knew she was more comfortable in a lab environment. While working in a commercial lab, she discovered she might be able to fulfill both aspirations, supporting physicians by performing tests on blood and body fluid specimens and identifying abnormalities.
In preparation for her application to NAIT’s full-time Medical Laboratory Technology program, Alfreda knew she had to increase her knowledge about the human body and medical terminology, so she registered for NAIT’s Continuing Education Medical Terminology course summer course. “Choosing NAIT was a no-brainer,” Alfreda says. “It’s impossible to ignore this institution’s reputation for academic excellence.”
Studying at her own pace, Alfreda completed online courses and solidified her interest in this new career path.
Alfreda has just completed her first year of study. She found that NAIT’s hands-on approach equips graduates of the program with excellent lab skill sets. One of the best skills Alfreda gained was the ability to critically think and assess situations.
“I liked that the program is designed for the success of the student and I gained a lifelong mentor out of my instructor.”
Alfreda plans to graduate in May 2018. She is excited about working in a hospital to help diagnose, monitor, treat and prevent patient diseases.
