Culinary and Pastry Boot Camps 2017
Growing up on a farm just outside of Thorsby, Alberta, Jessica Vaudan enjoyed the fruits of her labour. Now living on an acreage just outside of Spruce Grove, she uses the vegetables from her garden and the eggs from her chickens to make wonderful creations in the kitchen.
Inspired by her experiences travelling and teaching in Asia, where she explored new culinary delights, Jessica brought her passion back home and is currently a Home Ec teacher at Christ the King School in Leduc. In order to gain additional professional development and more confidence in the kitchen, she sought out the Culinary Boot Camps at NAIT for its reputation and practical hands-on skills.
“As a teacher, you’re always looking to develop your skills. I appreciated that the courses were available during the summer as I don’t have much time throughout the year.”
“Living on a farm inspired me to enroll in NAIT’s Continuing Education Culinary Boot Camps to grow my culinary skills.”
While taking the Pastry and Gourmet Boot Camps, she was pleasantly surprised by the different abilities and skills of students from all around the province. “It was nice to see that there weren’t just highly skilled professionals taking the course, pretty much anyone can take the course and accomplish it.”
The boot camp cooking lessons reminded Jessica of the food she ate in the different countries she visited, from breads and sauces to butter chicken. Her favourite part of the Culinary Boot Camp was the Friday dinner where the students showcased what they learned to their friends and family.
Grateful for networking opportunities and the culinary experts at NAIT, Jessica was able to gain the confidence and additional skills to take back to her Home Economic students.
