Value Added Learning
While students are accustomed to coming to the library for their individual needs, the library can also come to students. Programs across NAIT invite librarians to visit and assist students by tailoring library information to their programs.
“In consultation with an instructor, classes are customized for students in specific programs or degrees. Within the themes of communication, technical writing and research, we give students practice in finding and evaluating information relevant to their field, and then using that information in a professional manner,” says Isobel Rancier, coordinator for outreach and engagement at the Learning and Teaching Commons.
In the sessions, librarians guide students each step of the way, from preliminary topic brainstorming through to using advanced databases.
Business instructor Teresa Sturgess appreciates the tailored classes.
“The courses I teach at NAIT involve industry projects. One way that students can really add value for their clients is by conducting research, both first hand, primary research and also by looking at the secondary resources available to them. I have Carmen [one of NAIT’s librarians] come to speak to my students using a customized presentation for the Public Relations class. Her workshop takes them through databases and websites with a PR lens in mind.”
In a world where information grows at an exponential rate, and sometimes lacks in quality and accuracy, developing information literacy skills is important.
Resources available in the library include ebooks, online journal articles, streaming media, codes and standards and Open Educational Resources.
Rob Ruzycki, a student in the Alternative Energy Technology program, appreciates the help given by the library team.
“I really benefited from [the classes] we had on using the library services. Since then I have consulted with three different librarians about extra help I needed ranging from research tips to power point presentations. Each time the staff was very helpful and informative.”
