Taylor Oliwa, Mechanical Engineering Technology
NAIT scholarship recipient, Taylor Oliwa, says receiving support while attending NAIT has taken a weight off his shoulders.
More than a decade ago, Taylor was involved in a motorcycle accident with a semi-truck. Among his injuries, he suffered a contusion to his skull, a broken leg in three places and, unbeknownst to him, an underlying shoulder injury.
Several years passed and after working as a sheet metal worker for nine years, his shoulder injury worsened. Eventually, he couldn’t raise his arm higher than shoulder level. Simply unable to do the physically intensive sheet metal work, he faced a life-changing decision about what to do next.
In 2016, he opted for a career change and enrolled in NAIT’s Mechanical Engineering Technology program. In addition to keeping his grades up, he also tutors students with disabilities in NAIT’s Sheet Metal program.
Taylor, who is married to Anita—a NAIT Respiratory Therapy graduate—says being a student again and going to a one income household has been a big adjustment for their family. Scholarships allow him to focus on what’s really important: his family.
“Every scholarship dollar means I get to spend an extra hour with my daughter and wife,” says Taylor who became a first-time dad in January to a little girl named Kinsley.
