Program Model / Completion Requirements
For the Refraction course (OPSC617), all assignments are delivered online. The scheduled final examination is written in paper format at either the NAIT Main Campus in Edmonton or the NAIT Calgary Campus. Students living further than 175 km from either the Edmonton Main Campus or the Calgary Campus may write their final exam in an approved alternate exam location on the same day as the scheduled exams in Edmonton and Calgary.
For the Refraction Clinical course (OPSC695), all training will take place in the student’s workplace under the direct supervision of a certified refracting optician or certified ophthalmic medical technologist, optometrist or ophthalmologist. Students will complete a clinical manual within the six-month time frame.
To receive a NAIT Continuing Education Refraction Certificate, you must successfully complete both OPSC617 and OPSC695.
You are eligible for registration in the Refraction course if you are a contact lens fitter in good standing with your provincial regulatory body.
You are eligible for registration in the Refraction Clinical course upon successful completion of the Refraction course or you may take it concurrently with the Refraction course.
Students who live and work within Alberta register with the Optical Sciences Program Office (not the NAIT Registrar’s Office). Students who live and work outside Alberta register with the Opticians Association of Canada (OAC). To contact the OAC, please phone 1-800-847-3155 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
