In this course, students will be introduced to removable partial denture design. The Kennedy classification system will be used to classify partially edentulous arches and the impact of classification on design will be explored. Students will learn the components that make up removable partial dentures and how to combine those components into elementary classification designs. The dental surveyor will be used to survey cast surfaces and this information will be incorporated into three dimensional designs. Students will practice these techniques by completing casework.

Sterilization and disinfection procedures that will prevent the spread of infection throughout a patient care clinic are outlined. Pathogenic microorganisms, especially those that can infect the oral cavity, are discussed. Although emphasis is placed on pathogenic bacteria, viruses, protozoa and fungi are also included. Clinical and laboratory asepsis in the environment of a patient care clinic and a dental laboratory is studied. Personal and patient safeguards to eliminate cross contamination is a major aspect of this course.

Standard procedures such as denture repairs, fabrication of registration devices, and processing/finishing of acrylic resin dentures are major course components. Students will utilize final impressions from patient cases to make master casts. Additional time will be spent upon developing an understanding of maxillomandibular relationships.

Students will be introduced to alternate options for selecting and combining components. The principles for ideal removable partial denture design will be expanded upon. Tooth modifications will be discussed and preparations will be cut onto surveyed models. Management components including ongoing business records, computers in the Denturist office, third party dental insurances, leasing, product valuation and marketing will be discussed.
