A distinctive feature of the Records Management and Business Operations program is the variety and scope of work situations open to its graduates. Graduates of this program have started their careers in positions such as:
Training plus experience on the job can lead to positions in office records management. An eRecords & Information Management Certificate is offered at NAIT for those currently working in the records field and can only take classes during the evenings.
The training appeals to those seeking a rewarding office career with opportunities for advancement to supervisory positions or to individuals who wish to use it as a first career, a practical base or stepping stone to other career paths. This program also appeals to the university-trained or university-bound individual who wishes to combine academic education with practical training to enhance future employment potential. Our graduates choose from a wide variety of work environments, such as luxury executive suites, informal construction field offices, single administrative professional offices and large corporate offices.
Jasmyn Westover, 2009
Police Records Clerk,
Quality Assurance Unit, Edmonton Police Service (EPS)
As a single mother, I required an education that would prepare me for the real world. Through the Office and Records Administration program, now known as the Records Management and Business Operations program, I was able to benefit from small class sizes that allowed the instructors to focus on me the individual rather than the class as a whole. The education provided by the instructors ensured that once I graduated I was able to apply for a vast majority of jobs and/or continue with my education by continuing on to a degree in a more specific area of administration. Due to the economic crisis, applying for jobs was not ideal when I graduated. However, I was able to benefit from going to many different interviews for which I was well prepared and for positions I was well trained. The career I started at EPS allows me to take my entry level position and use it as a stepping stone into the bigger world of administration. After only 6 months in my EPS career, my supervisor asked me to take on the role of re-doing a manual that 40 other people in my office use on a daily basis as a reference point and new employees will use when they get hired and trained. They asked me to do it because of the in-depth Microsoft Office training I received at NAIT. I am thankful for the education I received at NAIT since it has facilitated “on-the-job” training I required entering the workforce.
I asked my employers why I was chosen for my current position and they stated that the expert level of training in the main software programs is what caught their attention. They were looking for someone with excellent computer skills and the ability to take on a challenging role with many diverse tasks. They said that after reading about the Office and Records Administration program, they concluded that the graduates from the program had everything they were looking for.
I absolutely feel that if it were not for this program, I would not be where I am today. The software program, grammar and organizational skills taught gave me confidence to work at all levels, and the real-life situations used as teaching tools give the experience the companies are looking for. All those combined make for a very professional, confident individual ready to make an immediate impact on any company.
