Repaying Your Student Loan

Make sure you are on the road to successful repayment and have the right tools to make informed decisions.

Sign on to EDULINX Online Services and complete the Exit Counselling session. It only takes 10 minutes of your time. The Exit Counselling session walks you through the repayment process, shows you how loans work and explains different options if you can’t make payments on time.

*You may have received student funding from more than one source even though you applied on one application*

You may have received funding from:

Six-Month Grace Period

You are not required to make payments on your loans for six months after completing your studies; however, interest does accumulate on your loan during this time. Once a repayment schedule has been calculated you will be expected to begin making monthly installments on the balance owing on your loan.

Keeping Your Information Up to Date

When your information or circumstances change, you must tell your student loan providers about the changes. EDULINX and the National Student Loans Service Centre will email important information to you throughout the lifecycle of your loan. Be sure to add Canada-Alberta Student Loan Advisor to your "safe sender list" or address book so that you receive your personal email messages.

It is important for you to stay in touch with all the partners involved in the student loan process, including:

  • your post-secondary institution
  • Students Finance
  • EDULINX
  • the National Student Loans Service Centre
  • any other lending institution (such as a bank)

By communicating changes in your situation, especially your address, you make sure that you will receive all the correspondence about your student loan.  This is particularly important when it comes time to repay your loan.  You want to make sure your student loan stays in good standing; to protect your credit rating and to remain eligible for future student funding.

Keeping Your Loans in Interest-free Status

Alberta and Canada Student Loans

Your Alberta and Canada Student Loans are in interest-free status while you are in school full-time.  This means that, while you are a full-time student, you are not required to:

  • make payments on your loans
  • pay interest on your loans

Your loans are also interest free during summer break, as long as you return to studies and confirm your enrolment with your lenders by:

  • getting a new student loan, or
  • filling in the appropriate confirmation of enrolment form

*Confirmation of Enrollment forms must be signed by the NAIT Financial Aid Office.*
