NAIT Fuel Cell Applied Research Project

The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) is pleased to be partnering with Alberta Innovation and Science through the Alberta Energy Research Institute , ATCO Gas, Western Economic Diversification and Climate Change Central to install and integrate a 200 kW phosphoric acid fuel cell on NAIT's Main Campus.

This phosphoric acid fuel cell at NAIT is Canada's first high voltage, fully operational commercial fuel cell. It is located on NAIT’s main campus within a newly opened Interpretive Centre.

NAIT's Fuel Cell Project team will investigate various ways to use the energy produced by the fuel cell, such as heating NAIT's swimming pool and other facilities and using the electricity for our buildings.

In early 2005, a 5 kW solid oxide fuel cell will be installed in the Power Engineering Laboratory at NAIT and integrated into the utility system in the laboratory. This solid oxide fuel cell will be used for demonstration, educational and research purposes.

NAIT is currently developing fuel cell course material and will be delivering new courses in the fall of 2005.
