NAIT Student Counselling

FAQs

Will my sessions be confidential?

The Student Counselling Service keeps your sessions private and all records secure.

How do I know if I should come for counselling?

Student Counsellors are here to help you with personal and academic concerns which may be interfering with your academic success. It may be useful to book an appointment with a counsellor if you have concerns which may include:

  • Academic Performance
  • Poor study skills
  • Time Management
  • Interpersonal issues
  • Decision-making difficulties
  • Feelings of helplessness or hopelessness
  • Thoughts of suicide or wanting to harm yourself or others.

If your concerns are regarding program scheduling or timetabling issues speak with the appropriate program contact. Difficulties with course material should be initially reviewed with the appropriate instructor. Financial concerns may be addressed in Room 0111.

How much will services cost?

Counselling sessions are free to current NAIT students.

When should I arrive for my appointment?

It is best to arrive 5 to 10 minutes in advance of your appointment in order to give the receptionist time to pull your file and/or to fill out any necessary forms. Please note that if you arrive more than 15 minutes late your appointment may be re-assigned.

How do I book an appointment?

Student Counselling is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You can book an appointment in person at W111PB, HP Centre, by phone on 378-6133, or by email at ssd@nait.ca.
If your concerns require immediate assistance you will be seen by the first available counsellor.

What can I expect from a counselling session?

Student Counselling offers students the chance to talk about concerns in confidence with an understanding and qualified professional. Counselling is a process of talking, listening and putting into action solutions to your problems. A counselling session is usually 50 minutes.

What if I am unable to attend an appointment?

Please phone Student Counselling at 378-6133 as soon as you know you will be unable to attend. Often other students are waiting to book appointments and your cancellation frees up a spot for them.

What are my rights as a student?

During your counselling session, you have the right to know the counsellor's qualifications, and information about support services available.
