"I feel like I won't be able to compete with other students..."
Every student has worked hard to secure a place at NAIT. Focus on your personal achievements and successful strategies you have used in the past such as setting priorities, managing your time, and using helpful study strategies.
"I'm not sure I can remember my schooling from a while ago..."
It may take a few weeks to adjust to the pace and load at NAIT. Be patient; give yourself a chance to succeed. If you still find you need to refresh your memory on subjects you learned in the past, visit NAIT's Tutorial Centre for assistance in: Math, Physics, and Chemisty. One subject where this concern is common is in Math. Take advantage of NAIT's free tutorial services for math, physics, and chemistry questions. We do recommend, however, that you upgrade in math if you have been out of school for more than 5 years. It is one of the skills that is lost most quickly.
"What if I don't fit in...?"
Many students share similar experiences as new students. Be patient and allow yourself time to connect and make new friends. Getting involved in social events, volunteer opportunities, and societies and clubs are some ways to connect.
"I'm worried that now I'm student I won't have enough money..."
Managing your money well helps to reduce your stress and support your success. You can pick up a budget planner from the Financial Aid office, Room O111 (Main Campus). Information on student loans, grants, and appeals is also available by calling 780.471.6248 or dropping by Room O111 (Main Campus).
"I'm thinking about taking a lighter course load. Will this mean I'm going to take too long to complete my program?"
Many students choose to spread their programs over three years rather than two. In some programs this is not possible, but if you're feeling overwhelmed, check with your program head to see if this is an option. Don’t reduce your course load too soon, though... most students feel overwhelmed during the first semester. If you do decide to reduce your load, look at it as a way of taking care of yourself and of coping with all the commitments you have.
"What if I don't know how to use computers very well?"
The Computer Commons (2nd floor, HP Centre) has computers available for student use and is open 24 hours a day. Ask your instructor what computer skills will be necessary for your course. If you don’t have those skills, consider hiring a tutor or getting help from a classmate or friend. NAIT's Tech Store (HP Centre) staff can offer helpful advice if you're planning to buy a computer.
