Becoming a Master Instructor (BMI) is one of the most successful instructor development programs in Canada.  Since its inception more than 20 years ago, BMI has provided training to thousands of new and experienced instructors in Canada and around the globe.

This intensive instructor training program is designed to provide teaching and learning theory and practice to subject matter experts who are new to the classroom, and to assist experienced instructors become even more effective in the classroom.  Whether instructors have years of teaching experience or are just beginning their teaching career, BMI builds on current expertise by providing new skills and techniques to better encourage instructor, and ultimately student success.  BMI also provides an opportunity for instructors from different program areas to network professionally and socially with others who have the same passion for teaching and learning.

Program Description

BMI is an instructor training program designed for both those who are embarking on a teaching career as well as those experienced instructors.  BMI is a two-part program that is mandatory for all full-time faculty at NAIT.  The program is open to instructors and trainers from any education institution, industry, government body or the public.

BMI 1 is the equivalent of ten days in length and provides an interactive overview of the fundamental principles of adult learning. Through discussion, in-class exercises, critical reflection, and three practice teaching sessions, participants will explore the foundational principles that facilitate designing student-centred learning, fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment, using assessment to enhance student learning, and designing strategies to align teaching practice with professional teaching responsibilities.

BMI 2 is the equivalent of four days in length and provides an overview of enhanced teaching competencies that foster ongoing development as a teaching professional Through discussion, in-class exercises, critical reflection, and one practice teaching session, participants will examine strategies that support a dynamic and inclusive student-centred learning community, the design of assessment tools for a variety of outcomes and learners, and the embedding of scholarly practice in their teaching.

Instructors external to NAIT are welcome to enrol in BMI through either the full-time program, or the part-time delivery through the Department of Continuing Education.  The program is also available for off-site delivery to academic institutions, industry, government and the general public anywhere in the world.  BMI has recently been delivered in Cuba, USA, Ukraine, Bolivia, and across Canada.
