NAIT promotes the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) amongst instructors as it contributes to the ongoing development of:

  • teaching and learning excellence
  • quality programming
  • transformative opportunities for instructors and students
  • knowledge creation and application
  • collegiality with the NAIT community

All instructors at NAIT are expected to integrate ongoing disciplinary expertise and currency with pedagogical best practices. Therefore, instructors are encouraged to inquire into the processes of teaching and learning to discover, integrate, apply, and share knowledge. As such, SoTL is aimed at connecting the learning of individual instructors with other instructors within and outside of NAIT. NAIT's SoTL initiatives are an extension of work begun as an institutional participant in the Campus Program of the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL), 2006-2009.

Dr. Bill Dushenko, Dean of the School of Sustainable Building and Environmental Management, and co-chair and strong advocate of SoTL, notes:

"It’s really an important way for faculty to discuss and share their teaching and learning experiences by collaborating through communities of practice and other collegial means as teaching professionals."

NAIT endorses SoTL through a standing committee of its Academic Management Team: the SoTL Committee. On this website, you will find information about SoTL, the SoTL committee, NAIT's SoTL Grant and Award Program, how you can engage in SoTL, and much more. Should you have any questions or comments please contact one of NAIT's SoTL committee members.
