Use of an ineligible player has cost the NAIT Ooks two victories in Alberta college basketball.
Men’s coach Don Phillips confirmed Monday that ACAC officials notified him that two apparent victories over the Grande Prairie Wolves had been forfeited because of an error in the registration of former MacEwan Griffins standout Ryan Sherman.
“I was told to fill out a transfer form and I did that,” said Phillips, a first-year ACAC coach. “I didn’t know about having to fill out an eligibility form in addition. The first I heard of it was when I got the call saying the points (in league standings) had been taken away.”
NAIT hammered Grande Prairie 89-52 in Friday’s game and registered a 90-51 triumph on Saturday. Sherman, a 220-pound forward who stands 6-7, played about 26 minutes in the two games and collected 26 points and 11 rebounds.
The ACAC decision left the Ooks with eight wins and eight losses as they face the Lakeland Rustlers in a weekend doubleheader, Friday in Lloydminster and Saturday at the NAIT gym. Lakeland has nine wins and five defeats.
“We had gone past Lakeland with those two results,” Phillips said. “Now, it’s more important than ever that we get a pair of wins this weekend.”
