Women's basketball team to raise money for Breast Cancer Foundation

WHAT: The NAIT Ooks’ women’s basketball team will be holding a Breast Cancer Fundraiser and Silent Auction on Saturday night during one of their regular season games. The entire team will be in pink uniforms with a pink ribbon on each of their jerseys. Even the refs will have pink whistles. (Edmonton basketball officials are having a Breast Cancer awareness week campaign from February 1 – 7 which coincides with the efforts at NAIT.)

Dale-Marie Cumberbatch, the captain of the team, has been working on the idea of a Breast Cancer fundraiser for about two years and is happy to see her idea come to fruition. Her aunt, Patricia Warrick, died from breast cancer five years ago on February 6th – the date of this first annual fundraiser. “This fundraiser will be very personal for me. I want to raise awareness about the disease and raise money for research,” says Dale-Marie.

The official name of the event is the NAIT “OOKPiNK” Breast Cancer awareness basketball game, which is sponsored by Footlocker Canada. (The official mascot for the team is the Ookpik so there is a play on words there.)

WHERE/WHEN:
Saturday, February 6th, 2010
NAIT Gym – Main Campus
5 p.m.
– Doors Open/Silent Auction   6 p.m. – Game starts

WHY: Help spread the word so the team can fill the gym. Ticket proceeds will be donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Breast Cancer survivors and other special guests will be attending the game to support the efforts of the Ooks’ women’s basketball team. This will be a lively event as well – with contest, draws and in-game entertainment.
