Largest capital project in NAIT’s history opens as new academic year begins

Centre for Applied Technology includes advanced laboratories and simulation rooms

Classes begin today for the first time in NAIT’s new Centre for Applied Technology (CAT) at Main Campus, one of the largest post-secondary buildings in the country.

CAT will accommodate thousands of students daily in the School of Health and Life Sciences, the JR Shaw School of Business and the School of Applied Sciences and Technology. The five-storey building includes technologically-advanced laboratories and simulation rooms.

NAIT programs are in high demand, with the polytechnic last year receiving five applications for every one seat available in credit programs (those programs leading to degrees, diplomas or certificates). Already, fall 2016 applications are up 4.7% from one year earlier, and up nearly 8.5% from fall 2014.

CAT will help NAIT meet demand. At 51,600-square-metres (550,000-square-feet), the building is roughly the same size as the nearby Kingsway Mall. The new front door to campus, CAT includes the Student Service Centre and food outlets, as well as pedways and pedestrian pathways to other campus facilities and services.
