Culinary Team NAIT brings home five medals from Culinary Olympics in Germany
NAIT culinary students competed against the best in the world at the Culinary Olympics, winning five medals
Culinary Team NAIT has returned from the IKA/Culinary Olympics in Germany with five medals after competing against students, chefs, and cooks from some of the best culinary schools and restaurants in the world.
Team members earned one gold, one silver, and three bronze medals at the IKA/Culinary Olympics which ran Oct. 22 to 25 in Erfurt, Germany. During NAIT’s last competition at the 2012 Culinary Olympics, the team hauled in four medals – two gold and two silver. Students from NAIT prepared a five-course meal and four appetizers as part of the competition this year. Two of those appetizers had to be a hot dish and two had to be cold.
This year’s world culinary games included 18 kitchens and more than 2,000 chefs from 50 countries – including those from Culinary Team NAIT – who prepared more than 7,000 meals during the entire competition. The IKA/Culinary Olympics is held every four years and involves national teams, youth national teams, regional teams and caterers competing for medals in their discipline.
Vinod Varshney, chair, NAIT’s culinary arts program
“The Culinary Olympics is a life-long experience for these young chefs. This is a great opportunity for them to work side-by-side with the best chefs, along with learning from them. This gives them a chance for networking for their future endeavours.”
