Partnership between NAIT and Capital Region Housing allows low-income Edmontonians to train as apprentices

EDMONTON – Low-income Edmontonians living in affordable housing can train as apprentices and work for a local construction company thanks to a unique partnership between NAIT, Stuart Olson and Capital Region Housing.

The Building Careers That Fit project, open to tenants of Capital Region Housing (CRH), will see participants train at NAIT as apprentices while working for Stuart Olson building a new affordable housing project in Londonderry. Stuart Olson aims to hire a minimum of five per cent of its workforce for the project from CRH tenants.

Interested tenants are invited to a trades preview event at NAIT where they can work hands-on in NAIT’s shops and labs to try out trades including millwork and carpentry, electrician, plumber, sheet metal worker and HVAC refrigeration technician.

The event will include information about resume-writing, interview techniques, supports for employment and financial aid. Participants will also have the chance to talk to Stuart Olson staff about working in the construction industry.

Media are invited to attend.
