NAIT partners with a world leader to create a world class machinist training centre
WHAT: NAIT is celebrating the grand opening of the Sandvik Coromant Centre for Machinist Technology with a $2 million donation from Sandvik Coromant of Sweden.
NAIT’s Machinist Program was one of the first programs offered at NAIT. The first apprentices enrolled in 1963/64. The program has dramatically grown over the years, mirroring the rapid expansion of industry in Alberta. The demand for machinists has never been higher. This new centre will increase capacity in apprentice programs by 50%. NAIT trains more than 70 % of all machinists in the province.
Sandvik Coromant leads the world in cutting tool technology. This is NAIT’s first funding partnership with a company based in Europe.

WHY: The equipment in this facility makes NAIT the envy of the other institutions offering machinist training in North America. The updated facility is approximately 31,000 sq ft, almost three times the size of the old training space. The media will get plenty of opportunities to see the equipment in action, talk to students and interview dignitaries. The Honourable Rona Ambrose, President of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of Western Economic Diversification will be taking part in the official ceremony. There will also be a provincial government representative. Both the levels of government contributed to the project.
