Badminton team wraps up post-season with strong showing at nationals
Jordan Richey has been named 2012 Badminton Coach of the Year and Dan Kai has been named Male Player of the Year by the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association.
Richey and Kai received the awards at the Badminton Championship Awards Banquet at the 2012 CCAA Badminton National Championship in Kamloops, B.C., March 1-3. The Ooks badminton team wrapped up the post-season with two gold medals and one silver medal at the tournament.
“We are very proud of the accomplishments of Jordan and Dan,” said Linda Henderson, NAIT director of athletics and recreation. “Both are very deserving of the recognition by their peers. They are extremely committed to their sport and have shown exceptional skill and leadership both on and off the court.”
Going into the nationals, the Ooks were ranked second in the CCAA national rankings and were at the top of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) conference for the fourth straight year.
“It was an honour to receive the CCAA Coach of the Year Award but all the credit needs to go to our veteran players because they have established a winning tradition,” said Richey.
Eight members of the badminton squad qualified for the national tournament, which was hosted by Thompson Rivers University.
The medal winners were Kai (gold in men’s singles), Jessica Yu and Sinead Cheah (gold in women’s doubles) as well as Weslee Cheah and Quinn Conway (silver in mixed doubles). The other Ooks who qualified for the nationals were Ellexis Lathan (women’s singles) and Jason Chang and Jason Chou (men’s doubles). This was Kai’s fourth national title.
“Kai’s performance at the nationals was sensational,” said Richey. “His professional attitude and mental preparation allowed him to keep focused on his objective of winning his fourth nationals singles championship.”
