NAIT looking for 500 dental patients between the ages of four and 21
Students in NAIT’s Dental Assisting program want to help put smiles on the faces of 500 young patients.
The institute is offering $10 teeth cleaning and fluoride treatment in May and June for those between the ages of four and 21. The cleaning will be done in NAIT’s state-of-the art dental clinic, which has recently undergone a major renovation.
“Over the course of the year, every dental assisting student is required to see approximately 10 patients. We still need another 500 patients to meet our need,” explained Linda McCaughey, an educational lab technologist in NAIT’s School of Health Sciences.
In addition to getting a gleaming smile, patients receive thorough dental health education. Topics covered include proper brushing/flossing, and what the good, bad and “ugly” foods are for your teeth.
“This is a win-win for everyone involved,” said McCaughey. “Patients receive courteous and professional service for $10 – a fraction of what it would cost at the dentist’s office - while students receive the experience they need in order to successfully complete the program.”
The cleaning and fluoride treatment is done under the close supervision of NAIT instructors. It takes about two hours.
NAIT’s dental clinic underwent a complete upgrade last year. The old equipment - including 15 dental chairs, three x-ray units and cabinetry - was removed and donated to help train dental professionals in Rwanda.
