New Ookpik mascots handcrafted by Inuit elder to be unveiled
WHAT: Inuit elder Peggy Richardson has handcrafted two ookpik mascots to commemorate NAIT’s 50th anniversary. She will present one Ook to NAIT and the other to the NAIT Students’ Association (NAITSA).
WHERE: NAIT Main Campus
EnCana Aboriginal Student Centre
Room E121 (Building E on attached map)
11762 – 106 St.
WHEN: Wednesday, May 23, 2012
WHO: Peggy Richardson, NAIT Inuit elder
Dr. Glenn Feltham, NAIT president and CEO
Teagan Gahler, NAITSA president
WHY: As a young girl growing up in the North, Richardson used to make ookpiks for the men and women working on the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line.
Richardson hadn’t made an ookpik in three decades, but was inspired to make two for NAIT after learning the institute had launched a search for its missing original Ook, which was a gift from the Department of Northern Affairs and National Resources to NAITSA in 1964.
Come see Richardson’s Ooks for yourself, which she crafted by hand in the traditional Inuit style.
