National Curling Championships coming to NAIT

NAIT will welcome curlers from across the country next March when it hosts the 2013 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Curling Championships.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be selected to host this national event,” said Dr. Glenn Feltham, NAIT president and CEO. “The institute has a proven track record in hosting national athletic events and we are excited to be doing it again.”

NAIT has a proud curling history.  World-class curlers Kevin Martin and Adam Enright honed their craft while at NAIT, under the leadership of coach Jules Owchar. While Owchar retired from teaching in 2003, he remains coach of the NAIT Ooks curling and golf teams. Martin and Enright were recently presented with NAIT alumni awards, recognizing their accomplishments and contributions to the institute and community.

“Our women’s team won a bronze medal at the inaugural National Championships last year, so it seems very fitting to be able to host such a prestigious event,” says Linda Henderson, director, Department of Athletics and Recreation. “We are looking forward to welcoming the rest of Canada to NAIT.”

NAIT curlers have won more than 30 Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference championships in men’s, women’s and mixed events. And the institute has hosted national athletic events ranging from badminton (1987, 1998, 2002, 2010) to basketball (1989, 2005) and hockey (1989, 1992).

“Our administrative and technical expertise and experience will ensure the 2013 CCAA Curling Championships are both successful and memorable for all,” said Feltham.

The four-day event takes place March 20-23, 2013 at the Avonair Curling Club, directly across from NAIT on Princess Elizabeth Avenue.
