New student advising centre enhances the NAIT experience
NAIT’s first student advising centre is an innovative space where students can explore academic options, learn about new pathways and enhance their experiences at the institute.
The Advising Centre – located at Main Campus in the HP Centre - represents an important aspect of NAIT’s New Academic Model, which is in the process of being implemented. This academic model allows students more flexibility, including the ability to explore options by taking courses in different program areas. The New Academic Model also provides more part-time and online course options.
Advisors are available at The Advising Centre to meet with students and guide them in their studies and career paths.
“We are very excited about the opening of The Advising Centre and what it means for NAIT,” said Dr. Paula Burns, provost and vice-president academic. “As students benefit from the increased flexibility and number of pathways created by the new model, we recognize the need to provide them with central advising services to help guide them in their decisions.”
Burns noted The Advising Centre also speaks to NAIT’s commitment to providing students with relevant knowledge and real skills in preparation for rewarding careers. Through this focus on students, NAIT had grown to become one of Canada’s top polytechnics.
The level and specificity of advising provided to students is dependent on where they are in the student lifecycle. As a prospect or applicant, a student will need more general information about many factors, including programs, financial aid and career paths. Registered students might require more specific information as they consider changing programs. As students get closer to graduation, they may need support in the development of their resume or interview skills. In all cases, the advisors, residing within The Advising Centre, will work closely with the programs and other service areas to ensure that wherever a student is in the lifecycle, they will receive seamless advising services.
The Advising Centre is located next to Bytes Cafeteria on Main Campus.
