Grandmother knits 1,000 toques for Share the Warmth campaign
WHAT: NAIT staff, students, alumni and friends have once again helped retired NAIT instructor Gordon Smith continue his Christmas tradition of collecting warm clothing for the less fortunate.
This year, over 2,000 toques, scarves, pairs of gloves and pairs of socks were collected for Smith’s Share the Warmth campaign, in addition to $1,900 in donations. This includes 1,000 toques knitted over the course of 18 months by 84-year-old Edmonton grandmother Jane Van Zyll Langhout, whose two daughters work at NAIT. This year’s corporate sponsors include MBS Insurance Brokers Ltd., and Imagewear – a division of Mark’s.

This year’s recipient charities include Boyle McCauley Health Centre, Kindred House, Hope Mission and the Elizabeth Fry Society of Edmonton.
Gordon Smith started a donation campaign years ago in which he organized a year-long collection of socks that were then donated to the Boyle McCauley Health Centre. Seven years ago, after Smith retired, the NAIT Academic Staff Association (NASA) expanded the donation campaign to include gloves, toques and scarves. More than 2,000 items are collected each year and then delivered to the Hope Mission, the Boyle McCauley Health Centre and their subsidiaries.
NAIT staff, students and alumni continue to show their community spirit by supporting this annual campaign. Donation boxes are set up around campus for weeks.
