Ten-year commitment from Edmonton Fasteners provides students with tools for success
NAIT is able to keep at the forefront of trades training thanks to Edmonton Fastners & Tools Ltd., which has made a lease donation of tools valued at more than $763,000. The 10-year commitment, which began in August 2010, gives students from NAIT’s Millwork and Carpentry, Cabinetmaker, and Carpenter programs experience using leading-edge tooling.
NAIT has eight fully equipped shops on Main Campus dedicated to training 160 Cabinetmakers, 60 Millwork students, and 900 Carpenter apprentices each year. Students spend anywhere from 15 to 19-hours per week in NAIT's modern, well-equipped wood shops. The generous donation from Edmonton Fasteners & Tools Ltd. will facilitate hands-on learning using a variety of tools including:
- belt sanders
- biscuit joiners
- laminate trimmers
- routers and router kits
- jigsaws, circular saws and jigsaws, and mitre saws with stands
- cordless drills, pneumatic nailers and drill drivers
“All Carpenter Cabinetmaker apprentices, along with Millwork and Carpentry Certificate students—approximately 1,100 students each year—will benefit from being able to work with the very latest power tools,” says Paul Roberts, chair of NAIT’s Advanced Woodworking and Building Trades programs. “They are available for staff and students to buy in late June, at the end of the school year.”
The cost of tools can be quite prohibitive, particularly for students with limited budgets. The sale of tools at discounted prices eases this financial strain and allows apprentices to enter the workforce armed with the high-quality tools they will need on the job.
“It's important to support our future” says Rick Gillespie, sales representative at Edmonton Fasteners & Tools Ltd. “This program helps ensure the success of current and future tradespeople.”
NAIT is one of the largest apprenticeship trainers in Canada, offering 35 apprenticeship trades with the capacity to train over 15,000 apprentices annually. Part of NAIT’s School of Trades, the Millwork and Carpentry, Cabinetmaker, and Carpentry programs help create a recruitment base of skilled personnel ready to embark on exciting careers that include cabinet-making, industrial and commercial construction, residential home construction, architectural millwork, and furniture design and construction.
