Winner of $20,000 Hatch Business Plan Competition to be announced
WHAT: Four teams of current and former NAIT students are competing for a chance to win $20,000 in seed money in the Hatch Business Plan Competition. Earlier this week, the teams pitched their concepts to a panel of judges. The winner will be announced by NAIT President and CEO, Dr. Glenn Feltham.

WHY: The contestants have invested countless hours in their business concepts, have pitched their ideas and are anxiously waiting to find out who the winner will be.
The $20,000 at stake will go a long way to making their business dreams a reality. The funding is to be used for expenses directly related to moving the winning business plan forward. The prize also includes one year of business incubation space with novaNAIT – NAIT’s home of applied research and enterprise development - to help get things started.
Mabe Studios: Mabe Studios is a digital media company that has created the "Make Believe" learning platform for kids ages four to nine. With a focus on increasing literacy, this integrated online and multi-device education application provides young readers with a fun way to learn to read and increase their comprehension skills. The goal of MaBe Studios is to make the premier reading platform for personal use as well as use in the classroom.
Speed Management Inc: Speed Management Inc. looks to introduce fuel-based speed limiters combined with GPS integrated into a sophisticated software program. How this works is the GPS tracks the vehicle in real time and identifies the speed limit on that road, then adjusting and setting the speed limit in the vehicle. If the driver attempts to pass the limit set, fuel feed to the engine will be minimized until the vehicle is gradually brought back down to the set speed limit.
Kalast: Kalast is an online service that connects real-life independent businesses and gives them an outlet to the general public. Business owners can contact each other directly (limited to three messages per day to offset spam). Owners and managers can both post on behalf of the business in a private community where they talk about strategies, provide updates, share good and bad news, offer advice or post about any other topic they feel is relevant to their business.
8 Bit 3d: 8-Bit 3D is a 3D animation studio that offers services such as animations, 3D models, visual effects for film, film editing, post-production film services and motion graphics.
Hatch is a NAIT business plan competition for budding entrepreneurs to “hatch” their business idea into a viable business. The competition is open to ideas with a technology, science or knowledge-based focus.
The latest competition was open to full-time students, between 18 and 35 years of age, in their last year of study at NAIT in the 2012-2013 academic year or who graduated from NAIT in the 2011-2012 academic year.
Hatch is run by novaNAIT in association with Alberta Innovates Technology Futures and ENACTUS NAIT. The winning entrant receives $20,000 in seed money to be used for expenses directly related to implementing the business plan and services from novaNAIT’s Duncan-McNeill Centre for Innovation. This also includes up to one year of incubation space.
