NAIT students design elements of Canadian Western Bank branch in Abbotsford
Second-year NAIT student Michael Gross is the winner of the third annual Architectural Technology Design Contest, sponsored by the Canadian Western Bank Group (CWB Group).
NAIT Architectural Technology students were asked to create design concepts for CWB Group’s existing bank in Abbotsford, British Columbia, providing ideas on what the branch could look like if it were to be re-developed. The entries were judged based on concept, aesthetics, functionality, sustainability and corporate identity. Gross’ design won first place.
“Canadian Western Bank is proud to partner with NAIT on this initiative for the third consecutive year,” said Jack Wright, a senior vice president with CWB Group. “Students are empowered to use their creativity, knowledge and design skills to develop concepts that can be used in a real-world setting, and they always do an excellent job. Every year, the presentations are top-notch.”
During a reception on Thursday night at NAIT, CWB Group awarded cash prizes totaling $9,000 to the Top 10 design entries. Elements of the designs will be considered in the planning and construction of future branches.
Gross received $2,000 for his design. Tied for second place were Cody Hayne and Natasha Vanleeuwen who each received $1,500. The third-place prize of $1,000 went to Nigel Williamson. Honourary mentions went to John Barnes, Jennifer Berendt, Ryan Bilton, Mason Diduch, Justin Heeks and Jason Kremeniuk. They also each received $500.
“Congratulations to all the students who participated,” said Kevin Porter, chair of Environmental Design Technology at NAIT. “This competition has provided our students with valuable client interaction that we cannot duplicate in the classroom. I thank the Canadian Western Bank for this opportunity.”
