$100,000 donated to sharpen students’ knowledge in metal cutting
Cougar Drilling Solutions Inc. has donated $100,000 to establish the Cougar Drilling Solutions Inc. Lab. The lab is equipped with computer technology to sharpen students’ knowledge in the metal-cutting process by creating, verifying and editing programming for Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines.
The NAIT Machinist program – one of the first programs offered at NAIT – is housed in the NAIT Sandvik Coromant Centre for Machinist Technology. With the capacity to train up to 1,820 students each year, the centre was made possible by NAIT’s partnerships with industry leaders like Cougar Drilling Solutions Inc.
“Cougar’s support is seen publicly as a monetary donation, which is huge for us,” said Stewart Cook, associate dean for the School of Trades. “However, just as important is their continued support by apprenticing machinists, as students are the best support we can get.”
The Machinist program trains students through hands-on learning in precision metal-cutting and grinding using lathes, milling machines, drills and grinders to make and repair products and parts made from metals, plastics, rubber textiles, fibreglass and space-age alloys for different types of machinery and industrial equipment.
“Over the years we developed a partnership everyone benefits from,” said Blaine LaBonte, president of Cougar Drilling Solutions Inc. “We’ll continue to assist NAIT in training and mentoring students, both by direct support and through the apprenticeship program.”
The NAIT Sandvik Coromant Centre for Machinist Technology, a 31,000-square foot facility (just over half the size of an NFL football field), officially opened on March 14, 2008, and is located on NAIT’s Main Campus. The centre enables NAIT to deliver industry-driven, hands-on training to produce highly skilled professionals in response to Alberta and Canada’s manufacturing industry.
