Miller Electric Mfg. Co. welds industry-grade equipment with student success
Over a ten-year period, Miller Electric Mfg. Co. has committed to replace and update equipment for NAIT’s Welder program every year until 2019. The lease donation, valued at $281,900, provides students with practical training using industry-grade equipment to develop the strong hand skills needed to perform welding and cutting processes.
“NAIT and the Welding program have developed a great relationship with Miller, one in which the students really benefit from. This agreement gives us the ability to showcase the latest and greatest welding equipment on the market,” said Chris Manning, chair of NAIT’s Welding program. “The students benefit by gaining direct exposure to the most current advancements available to industry. Having the best of technology is just one more advantage we provide to the students who receive training at NAIT.”
Located in the NAIT Waiward Centre for Steel Technologies at the Souch Campus, the Welder program has the capacity to train 2,100 apprentices a year. The world-class centre is equipped with seven welding labs to train apprentices in six different welding processes to join or sever metals and make metal parts, tools, machines and equipment used in construction and manufacturing plants.
“Miller is committed to supporting education programs that help develop careers in welding and is delighted to be supporting NAIT,” said Kenneth Gould, region manager western Canada of Miller Electric Mfg. Co. “This partnership will ensure that students are able to work with the most technologically advanced and widely used welding equipment in the industry today.”
Offered at NAIT since 1967, the Welder program prepares apprentices for rewarding careers in high-demand industries, such as vessel or structural steel assembly, steel fabrication, heavy equipment repair, as well as pipeline, commercial and industrial construction. NAIT is responsible for training 50% of Alberta’s apprentices through 35 distinct programs. Thanks to the generosity of donors like Miller Electric Mfg. Co., NAIT is able to remain at the forefront of apprenticeship training and as a leading polytechnic in Canada.
NAIT is one of Canada’s leading polytechnics, with almost 80,000 registrations worldwide in key areas, including science, technology and the environment, business, health care and trades. Known for real-world education and student success, NAIT also engages with business and industry in applied research and innovation and provides corporate training around the world.
