Dow Chemical Canada ULC shows NAIT students how to power their careers
Students in NAIT’s Power Engineering Technology program benefited from Dow Canada’s donation of $50,000 used to sponsor Power Engineering – Where It Can Take You – a seminar showcasing the extensive field of power engineering at Dow Canada. As well, a portion of the funds will be used to operate, deliver and enhance the Power Engineering program at NAIT.
“We are very grateful for Dow’s generous donation in support of Power Engineering Technology. Alberta’s industry is in urgent need of highly trained power engineers” said Forrest Tittle, dean of the School of Sustainable Building and Environmental Management. “This donation will assist NAIT in preparing future power engineers for meaningful employment throughout Alberta and illustrates the power of collaboration between NAIT and its industry partners.”
During the seminar, Joe Deutscher, vice president and site director Alberta operations, provided 132 power engineering students with an overview of Dow Canada and the multitude of opportunities available. Students were then invited to speak with HR staff and NAIT alums that are now Dow Canada employees.
“We value our partnership with NAIT and we believe that by hiring local graduates it is helping to build strong, sustainable communities” said Deutscher. “We've hired many NAIT grads over the years, and to this day they continue to support various programs throughout this institution by being guest speakers, providing input on course curriculum and by participating in discussions surrounding industry best practices. They all remain enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge with the next generation.”
The Power Engineering Technology program provides students with the theoretical and practical skills necessary for the safe and efficient operation of boilers, pressure equipment, turbines, pumps, compressors and other plant equipment. Grads from this program are in high demand in sectors such as power generation, heating plants, refrigeration, oil and gas, petrochemicals and pulp and paper.
NAIT is one of Canada’s leading polytechnics, with almost 80,000 registrations worldwide in key areas including science, technology and the environment, business, health care and trades. Known for real-world education and student success, NAIT also engages with business and industry in applied research and innovation and provides corporate training around the world. NAIT enrolled its first students - 29 communication electrician apprentices - in 1962 and this year celebrates its 50th anniversary.
