Charles O’Toole named men’s soccer head coach
The Department of NAIT Athletics and Recreation is pleased to announce the hiring of Charles O’Toole as the fourth NAIT Ooks men’s soccer head coach in the program’s history.
O’Toole is a former NAIT grad from the Denturist program and played for the Ooks soccer program winning a national championship in 1987. O’Toole has been an assistant coach with the Ooks men’s team since 2009.
O’Toole brings an impressive coaching resume to the NAIT men’s soccer program. He has coached numerous Alberta Soccer Association teams including the 2011 Western Summer Games champions, the 2009 Canada Games silver medalists and the 2007 U16 Provincial Team national champions.
Aside from having extensive coaching experience, O’Toole has and continues to play the game at a high level. He currently plays with the Edmonton Victoria Masters Soccer Club and won a silver medal at the World Masters games in 2004. He played professionally with the Edmonton Brick Men in the PCL from 1986-1989 and gold medal at the 1985 Canada Summer games scoring the lone goal in the final.
O’Toole is looking forward to his new challenge of keeping the NAIT Ooks at the top of the ACAC.
“I am very happy to be given the opportunity to coach the NAIT men's soccer team," said O'Toole. "I look forward to continuing to build on the program that my predecessors Jeff Paulus, Graham Wood and Stuart Brown have developed. The team has been nationally ranked on a consistent basis over the years which is credit to these past coaches and to the dedication and talent of the players who attend NAIT. Not only does NAIT provide these athletes with an education that will carry them through life but also allows them to play soccer at a very high level. I look forward to competing in the upcoming ACAC season and to once again be a contender for a national title.”
NAIT Athletics manager Gregg Meropoulis was happy to have O’Toole assume control of the men’s soccer program.
"He has been a winner at NAIT as a player and an assistant coach. He now has the opportunity to put his stamp on the NAIT Ooks soccer team and I am confident he can get the job done."
Linda Henderson, NAIT’s director of athletics and recreation is looking forward to having O’Toole lead the men’s program into the future.
“We are delighted with the selection of Charles as our new men’s soccer coach. As a graduate out of NAIT and as an assistant coach with NAIT for the past three seasons, he fully understands the demands to attract good student-athletes to the institution. Charles has a wealth of coaching experience and has outstanding leadership skills both on and off the field. NAIT is very fortunate to have him as part of our winning program.”
