Ooks Athletics Association scholarships a real win for student-athletes
The Ooks Athletic Association (OAA) has once again shown their commitment to NAIT’s student-athletes with a $200,000 pledge towards scholarships. These scholarships will be awarded to students with demonstrated academic performance who are on one of NAIT’s 12 intercollegiate athletic teams.
Since 1994, the OAA has contributed over $600,000 to NAIT, establishing the Ooks Athletic Tuition Scholarship Fund and the Barb Hanson Athletic Endowment Fund. In addition, the OAA has supported the advancement of NAIT’s intercollegiate athletics programs.
“The OAA recognizes the impact that participation in intercollegiate sport can have on the overall development of the student-athlete,” said Gregg Meropoulis, president of the OAA. “As such, the organization is committed to supporting scholarships to promote student-athletes’ participation in sport.”
There are currently over 200 athletes enrolled as full-time students at NAIT. Liam Darragh, a Business Administration Marketing student and left-wing player on the men’s hockey team can attest the importance of these scholarships to student-athletes.
"I'm really fortunate to be a part of Ooks athletics,” said Darragh. “Receiving this scholarship allows me to focus my energy towards my schoolwork without having to add a job to an already busy schedule.”
So far this year alone, the OAA scholarships have been awarded to 18 student-athletes from a wide range of NAIT programs.
"The Ooks Athletic Association Scholarship has truly helped me achieve my goals and aspirations,” said Cody Cuthill, Mechanical Engineering Technology student and men’s volleyball player.
Cuthill, who is originally from British Columbia, said he is thankful for the additional support. “This scholarship is greatly appreciated by me and my family."
NAIT is pleased to offer student-athletes the opportunity to be recognized for their outstanding achievements. Thanks to partnerships with donors like the OAA, NAIT awards $4.3 million in scholarships and bursaries annually, impacting the lives of more than 3,600 students.
