Mike Connolly named men’s basketball coach
Mike Connolly has been named head coach of the NAIT Ooks men’s basketball team.
This past season Connolly coached the Keyano College Huskies men’s basketball team to a silver medal at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) championships and a berth at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) nationals.
Connolly had been coaching in Ft. McMurray for the past four seasons. Prior to coaching at Keyano, he was the head coach at the University of Lethbridge from 2002 until 2009. Connolly was also heavily involved with Basketball Alberta, coaching their junior and juvenile provincial teams at the Canada Games.
Connolly is looking forward to his new challenge of getting the NAIT Ooks back to the top of the ACAC.
"This is a great opportunity for me and I look forward to working with all the administration, staff, and athletes at NAIT to put a product together on the court that we can all be proud of."
NAIT Athletics Manager Gregg Meropoulis said he's happy to have Connolly assume control of the men’s basketball program.
"Mike Connolly is a seasoned coach who will add stability to the NAIT men's basketball team. Our expectations for our program are high and we believe that Mike will be able to establish a program that can succeed both in the classroom and on the floor."
Linda Henderson, director of athletics and recreation, said she is looking forward to having Connolly lead the men’s program into the future.
“Mike comes to NAIT with extensive head coaching experience. He brings with him a clear understanding of what will be needed to attract the top student-athletes to NAIT. His leadership, along with his commitment to the sport of basketball, are two of his strengths. He will be a great asset to our athletics team and we look forward to watching him take our men’s basketball program back to being a national contender.”
