Edmonton Motor Dealers’ Association drives students to succeed
The Edmonton Motor Dealers’ Association (EMDA) has pledged $1,300,000 to establish the NAIT Automotive Scholarships. Over the next 10 years, scholarships will be distributed to students who are currently employed by an EMDA member enrolled in one of NAIT’s automotive apprenticeship programs.
Since 1997, the EMDA has supported NAIT’s Automotive Service Technician, Parts Technician and Auto Body Service Technician apprentices through scholarships awarded on demonstrated financial need and academic achievement.
“These scholarships provide the financial support for apprentices when they need it the most,” said Darrell Bohnet, chair of the Automotive Service Technician program. “As a long-time supporter of NAIT, the EMDA has helped countless students successfully complete the program, ensuring a brighter future for themselves and their families.”
Offered at NAIT since 1963, NAIT currently contributes toward 42 per cent of the training for automotive service apprentices and non-apprentices in Alberta. Through a combination of on-the-job and classroom training, students in the Automotive Service Technician program learn to perform preventative maintenance, diagnose faulty operations, and repair automotive vehicles and light trucks.
“The EMDA is committed to helping automotive technicians advance their careers,” said Eleasha Naso, executive director. “Working together with NAIT, we are building a strong foundation of apprentices with the technical skills needed for the growth and prosperity of Edmonton businesses in the automotive industry.”
The EMDA’s continuing partnership with NAIT will be officially announced on April 17, the same day as the 2013 Edmonton Motorshow’s Precious Metal Gala. The Edmonton Motorshow is a premier automotive exhibition featuring top-quality entertainment and luxury car designs from all over North America. Hosted each year by the EMDA, the Edmonton Motorshow will be held at the Edmonton Expo Centre from April 18 to 21. The popularity of the exhibition provides the EMDA with the proceeds to put towards the NAIT Automotive Scholarships.

About Edmonton Motor Dealer Association
The first records of the EMDA are dated 1935, when a few car dealers met and collectively agreed to lobby for equalized freight rates for vehicles throughout Canada. In 1953, the Edmonton Motor Dealers' Association was incorporated as a non-profit society. There are currently 78 franchised new vehicle dealerships in the Association located in Edmonton, Sherwood Park, and St. Albert. The members directly employ in excess of 5,000 Edmontonians. They support their communities through charitable involvement and contribute hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations and in-kind contributions.
