Culinary Team NAIT sets new record in Hong Kong
Culinary Team NAIT has returned from the Hong Kong International Culinary Classic 13 with a record 20 medals.
“This was the first international competition for this team and I am absolutely thrilled with the results,” said Vinod Varshney, team manager. “The competition was fierce, but the students worked hard and the proof is in the pudding. Everyone was raving about the successes of Culinary Team NAIT.”
Team members earned four gold, eight silver and eight bronze medals - a new record for NAIT ¬– and won more medals than any other team at this year’s competition.
The Hong Kong International Culinary Classic 13, which ran May 7 -10, was part of HOFEX 2013 – the largest food and hospitality tradeshow in the Asia-Pacific region. Eleven members of Culinary Team NAIT participated, including students, their coaches and the team’s manager.
The students competed in both hot cooking and cold plate competitions.
In the hot food cooking competition, team members had 60 minutes to prepare and present a dish in one of four categories. In the cold competition, participants prepared appetizers and entrée dishes. In both competitions, the judges awarded points based on cleanliness, preparation, presentation and taste. All team members participated in one hot cooking competition, while three participated in the cold plate competition.
Members of NAIT’s culinary team include first and second-year Culinary Arts students, as well as apprentices. Team members were selected in January following a cook off. Team members developed their own recipes, with input and feedback from the coaches
