NAIT apprentice wins gold at WorldSkills in Germany
NAIT apprentice Michael Scheideman won gold in the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning category at the 2013 WorldSkills competition in Germany. Scheideman also won the Best of Nation award for receiving the highest score out of all of Team Canada, while NAIT apprentice Tyler Kenyon won a medallion of excellence in the Automobile Technology category.
This is the first time a NAIT participant has won a gold medal at WorldSkills.
“Competing and winning at WorldSkills has been the most rewarding experience of my life,” said Scheideman. “I have learned so much and met such great people. Studying and training at NAIT has been crucial to my success.”
Scheideman was one of five NAIT apprentices who represented Canada at the ‘Olympics’ of trades and technology. This was among the largest contingent of NAIT apprentices to ever participate in the WorldSkills.
“This is a remarkable accomplishment,” said Dr. Glenn Feltham, NAIT’s president and CEO. “Michael is, simply stated, the best in the world at his trade. To become so he had incredible support. He is a very special young man, with nerves of steel.”
The 42nd annual WorldSkills competition ran from July 2 -7 in the city of Leipzig. More than 1,000 competitors represented 53 member countries, making it the largest ever competition of its kind. Team Canada had 32 competitors in 46 skills categories.
Scheideman, 22, is from Grande Prairie and got his start in refrigeration at 14 years old, working with his uncle.
