NAIT to host 2014 national badminton championships
Some of Canada’s best badminton players will compete at NAIT this winter when the institute hosts the 2014 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Badminton National Championships. This will be the fifth time NAIT has hosted the championships.
“It’s always such an honour to host this event,” said Linda Henderson, NAIT director of athletics and recreation. “Our badminton program is one of the best in Canada. Head coach Jordan Richey does an amazing job recruiting and developing some of the best student-athletes not only in Canada, but internationally.”
The championships take place Feb. 26 to March 1, 2014. NAIT previously hosted championships in 1987, 1998, 2002 and 2010.
CCAA student-athletes from B.C., Alberta, Ontario and the Maritimes will compete in a round robin for national championship titles – men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
NAIT has a track record of badminton excellence. The team earned two gold medals and one silver medal at the 2012 CCAA Badminton National Championships at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, B.C. Last March, former Ooks badminton player Dan Kai became the first male athlete to win five CCAA titles, in badminton or any other sport. NAIT’s mixed-doubles team of Jessica Yu and Lei Chen also won gold at last year’s championships held at Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario.
Richey also sees the competition as a recruiting tool. Championships such as this often attract as spectators young players who are interested in pursuing the game at the collegiate level.
“We’re very excited to showcase the NAIT Ooks badminton program,” said Richey. “This will be a tremendous opportunity for young badminton players to see what it takes to compete at the elite level.”
NAIT is one of Canada’s leading polytechnics, with almost 80,000 registrations worldwide in key areas including science, technology and the environment, business, health and trades. Known for real-world education and student success, NAIT also engages with business and industry in applied research and innovation and provides corporate training around the world. NAIT enrolled its first students in 1962.
