Students gear up for 40th annual Bridge Building Competition
WHAT: Teams of NAIT students and alumni, as well as representatives of the construction industry and the University of Alberta Engineering Club, are gearing up for the 40th annual Bridge Building Competition.
Eight to 10 teams of 15 competitors, with at least two women per team, will construct rope suspension bridges across Whitemud Creek. The teams will then test the bridges by crossing the creek 30 times, before dismantling them. In one crossing, the teams will simulate saving an injured colleague. The team that finishes in the shortest time wins the event.
WHERE: Whitemud Creek Park
(off Fox Drive by Fort Edmonton Park)
WHEN: Saturday, October 5, 2013
9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
WHY: This is a fast-paced, dramatic race and the competition is fierce. Some teams choose to wear costumes, which adds to the fun of the event.
A food bank challenge has been issued this year to all teams in support of the Edmonton Food Bank. Teams are asked to bring in at least 30 pounds of food or face a time penalty.
