$200,000 donation is a valuable link to hands-on learning
Two programs at NAIT will be able to purchase up-to-date equipment and supplies, because of a $200,000 donation from AltaLink, L.P.
As a part of the commitment, $75,000 will be designated in support of the Electrical Engineering Technology program and $75,000 in support of the Wireless Systems Engineering Technology program.
Students in the Electrical Engineering spend nearly half their time in a laboratory setting to acquire the necessary skills using electrical and electronic equipment.
“Having the support of industry partners like AltaLink is absolutely invaluable,” stated Greg von Lipinski, chair of the program, “Without them we would never be able to afford the range and quality of lab equipment that we have to support our student’s learning every day. This donation will enable us to build realistic simulators that will have a definite impact on our students’ success.”
The Wireless Systems Engineering Technology program was launched in the fall of 2011.
Colin Polanski, chair of the program, emphasizes the importance of AltaLink’s support to teach students critical skills in testing equipment, computers and commercial systems. “As a result of the AltaLink donation, a wireless industrial communication system lab can now be built allowing students to gain hands-on practical experience which they may have only otherwise encountered once they entered into the industry.”
The remaining $50,000 of AltaLink’s donation will be allocated toward developing viable applied research solutions for the electric power transmission industry.
“Skilled electrical and wireless systems engineering technologists are important to the transmission industry,” said Dennis Frehlich, AltaLink’s interim president and chief operating officer. “We are proud to support research opportunities and equipment for students so they will be better prepared to lead innovation and new technology for the future of our industry.”
AltaLink has supported NAIT for nearly a decade. Through this continued partnership, NAIT and AltaLink will produce industry-ready skilled graduates and applied research in response to Alberta’s growing power transmission needs.
NAIT is one of Canada’s leading polytechnics, with almost 80,000 registrations worldwide in key areas, including science, technology and the environment, business, health care and trades. Known for real-world education and student success, NAIT also engages with business and industry in applied research and innovation and provides corporate training around the world. NAIT enrolled its first students - 29 communication electrician apprentices - in 1962.
