NAIT Dental Assisting program offering $10 teeth cleaning and fluoride treatment
NAIT has a deal that will put smiles on the faces of young dental patients and their parents, while helping students polish up their skills.
The Dental Assisting program is offering $10 teeth cleaning and fluoride treatment in May and June for patients between the ages of four and 21. The cleaning is done by students under the supervision of instructors in NAIT's modern dental clinic, which has recently undergone a major renovation.
“This is a win for everyone involved,” said Linda McCaughey, an instructor in NAIT's School of Health Sciences. "Patients receive courteous and professional service for $10 - a fraction of what it would cost at the dentist's office - while students receive the experience they need in order to successfully complete the program."
Over the course of the year, every dental assisting student is required to see approximately 10 patients. The program requires another 500 patients to meet this need.
The cleaning and fluoride treatment takes about two hours, and is done between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Tuesdays through Thursdays.
The Dental Assisting program is transitioning from a one-year certificate to a two-year diploma program beginning in the 2014-15 academic year. This is being done in response to industry demand for broader skill sets. Students will gain experience in orthodontics and scaling, which involves removing hard deposits from the teeth of adolescents, in addition to skills currently taught, including tooth polishing and fluoride application. The next teeth cleaning clinic will take place in 2016.
