NAIT apprentices eligible to compete against the world’s best
NAIT apprentices will have a chance to compete against the world’s best following an impressive showing at the Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC).
Nine apprentices represented NAIT on Team Alberta, winning two gold and three silver medals at the national competition, held June 4 to 7 in Toronto. Medal winners who earned the best marks will have a chance to form WorldSkills Team Canada 2015, traveling to the 43rd WorldSkills Competition in Brazil. Team Canada will be announced in early 2015 following the Canadian WorldSkills Trials.
“We’re very proud of all the competitors who represented NAIT,” said Malcolm Haines, dean of the School of Trades. “These students went up against some of the best apprentices in the nation. We’re looking forward to a very strong showing at WorldSkills.”
NAIT gold medal winners were Brennan Roy-Bertin (Automation & Control) and Jacob Fluker (Electrical Installations). Silver medal winners were Trevor Fandrick (CNC Machining), Keiran Hodges (Refrigeration) and Jesse (Wyatt) Ridsdale (Heavy Equipment Service).
Michael Scheideman, NAIT gold medal winner from the 2013 WorldSkills Competition in Germany, was named the Skills Canada Alberta 2014 Alumni of the Year. Todd Matsuba, associate chair of NAIT’s Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic program, who supported Scheideman in Germany, was named 2014 Skills Canada Alberta Volunteer of the Year.
Team Alberta members qualified for SCNC at the Provincial Skills Canada Competition, held May 14 to 15 in Edmonton. The SCNC is the only national, Olympic-style, multi-trade and technology event of its kind for your students and apprentices in the country.
