Gift to multi-sport summer camp keeps local youth active
A $10,000 gift from the Butler Family Foundation gave underprivileged youth the chance to attend a multi-sport summer camp at NAIT this past August.
At ages ranging from 10 to 13 years, the youth learned to develop fundamental skills in a variety of sports, including volleyball, basketball, football, soccer, swimming, dodgeball, floor hockey and badminton.
“The funds provided by the Butler Family Foundation allowed us to extend our summer camp programs to kids that otherwise would not have had a chance to attend,” said Carole Holt, recreation manager of NAIT’s Department of Athletics and Recreation. “We are so very appreciative of their support.”
With the assistance of staff from KidSport Edmonton, a non-profit organization that helps kids from low-income families participate in organized sports, 41 youth were selected for the week-long camp. Throughout the day, youth took part in group sessions, exercises, games and scrimmages as well as off-court activities emphasizing fun and team work.
Shannon Butler, executive coordinator of the foundation stresses the importance of these programs. “Participation in organized sports can have a great impact on the sense of belonging and self-esteem of children and youth.”
The Butler Family Foundation has previously funded another summer camp at NAIT. In 2012, 49 youth participated in a volleyball camp run by NAIT’s coaches and camp counsellors.
“In partnership with NAIT, the Butler Family Foundation is pleased to support local programming that promotes the mental, physical and social health within our community. Summer camps provide a positive environment in which at-risk youth learn the benefits of an active lifestyle.”
