NAIT ranked as one of Canada’s top research colleges

Posted: October 22, 2014

NAIT has retained second place in the national ranking of Canada’s Top 50 research colleges, after attracting $9.7 million in research funding last year. A highlight of NAIT’s applied research activities in 2013 was the expansion of the NAIT Boreal Research Institute in Peace River.

“We rock!” said NAIT President and CEO Dr. Glenn Feltham after learning of the institute’s ranking.  “As a leading polytechnic, NAIT is thrilled to be recognized for our applied research. The work undertaken at our Boreal Research Institute in Peace River is essential in promoting stewardship of the boreal forest through land reclamation and restoration of peatland ecosystems.”

The ranking of Canada’s Top 50 Research Colleges is conducted annually by Research Infosource Inc. NAIT placed first of eight colleges in Alberta, and second across Canada behind the British Columbia Institute of Technology.

In total, the eight Alberta institutes on the Top 50 list attracted $27.5 million of income to support applied research.

In May, NAIT celebrated the opening of a new, 9,000-square-foot Boreal Research Institute facility, which includes office space, labs and a greenhouse. NAIT researchers in the facility are collaborating with industry to develop innovative technologies to reclaim abandoned oil and gas well sites in northwest Alberta.

Research programs are built into NAIT’s five schools, where faculty and their teams conduct applied research that addresses industry’s need for relevant solutions to technology and business challenges.
