Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation scholarships help students pursue goals
The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation has donated $50,000 over five years toward scholarships for NAIT students.
Part of the donation will fund three annual scholarships for the women’s hockey team and three annual scholarships for the men’s hockey team. Valued at $1,500 each, recipients will be selected by NAIT’s coaching staff based on academic achievement and demonstrated involvement with the community.
“The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation scholarships have allowed us to build a strong professional collegiate hockey environment at NAIT,” said Serge Lajoie, head coach of the men’s team. “As a program, we are able to compensate and recognize members for their positive contributions to NAIT’s hockey teams because of this generous donation from the foundation.”
Moreover, these scholarships give much-needed support to student athletes whose already full schedules leave very little time for a job to supplement the cost of an education. Scholarships ensure NAIT’s hockey athletes are able to focus on their studies while competing for provincial and national titles.
The remaining $5,000 will be directed to the Rod Phillips Sports Broadcasting Scholarship, a $2,000 award that is jointly funded by Corus Entertainment. Named in honour of the now-retired announcer who served as the ‘Voice of the Oilers’ for over 3,500 games, the scholarship is disbursed to students interested in taking the same career path.
“Rod not only built a legacy, he also played a big part in mentoring NAIT’s students with a keen interest in sports radio broadcasting, often giving advice to hone their skills and become better play-by-play announcers,” said Patrick Galenza, chair of the Radio & Television program. “These scholarships are appreciated because they recognize our students who aspire for the same excellence Rod embodied in his career.”
Since 2001, the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation has donated a total of $190,000 in scholarships to 105 students. This renewed contribution demonstrates their ongoing commitment to helping students pursue their goals in athletics and post-secondary education.
"Investing in young, bright student athletes in Oil Country aligns perfectly with our mandate to support youth health, wellness and education,” said Natalie Minckler, executive director of the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation. “Our Foundation is proud of our partnership with NAIT and we’re thrilled to provide $50,000 worth of scholarships over the next five years to these deserving students."
