NAIT hosting top Alberta junior chef competition
EDMONTON – Up-and-coming chefs from across the province will go head-to-head this weekend when The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) hosts the Saputo Alberta Junior Culinary Challenge. The winner will represent Alberta at the national competition, to be held at the Canadian Culinary Federation/Fédération Culinaire Canadienne (CCFCC) Conference on May 28 in St. John’s, Nfld.
The provincial competition, which alternates annually between NAIT and SAIT, is open to students registered in a recognized culinary program in Alberta. This year, seven junior chefs have registered (five of whom come from NAIT).
Each competitor will plan a lacto-ovo (dairy and egg) vegetarian three-course menu for six people including a starter, main course and dessert, using mandatory cheese ingredients. Upon arrival, each competitor will draw numbers, which will determine their designated kitchen station, starting and service times. Competitors will prepare a turkey dish in advance of the competition, which will also be judged. The turkey course is sponsored by Alberta Turkey Producers and is unique to the Alberta competition.
