NAIT earns silver rating for sustainability initiatives
Greenhouse gas emissions have decreased by 21% since 2007
NAIT’s environmentally-friendly programs and initiatives have earned the institute a silver sustainability ranking, the highest of any Canadian polytechnic.
The Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS) is a self-reporting system for post-secondary institutions to measure and rate sustainability performance. NAIT was the first Canadian polytechnic to achieve a STARS rating in 2012, at the time ranking bronze. NAIT’s goal is to achieve a STARS gold rating by 2021.
The silver rating was awarded based on a number of factors, including decreasing greenhouse gas emissions by 21% since 2007. Applied research at NAIT is also addressing environmental challenges associated with the province’s energy sector. For example, NAIT’s Boreal Research Institute is exploring new ways to help the oil and gas industry return thousands of former oil and gas well sites to their natural states.
STARS is a widely used tool. There are 715 participating post-secondary institutions worldwide, including 52 in Canada (five of which are polytechnics).
• 62% of students and 30% of staff take alternative transportation to NAIT
• All office paper used at NAIT is Forest Stewardship Council-certified. This ensures the products come from responsibly managed forests.
• 15% of courses teach sustainability. This includes the Alternative Energy Technology program, where students get hands-on experience with non-traditional energy sources, including solar geothermal and wind.
Dr. Glenn Feltham, NAIT president and CEO
“Since obtaining our first STARS rating in 2012, we have worked together towards even greater sustainability and have now achieved a silver rating. I want to congratulate everyone involved in this accomplishment. Sustainability is important to NAIT. It is reflected in our vision. We want to ensure students leave our institution with a greater understanding of the environment and how they can help to reduce our impact.”
