geoLOGIC systems donates leading software to NAIT

Allows students to retrieve, analyze, display and report on oil well activity

Posted: July 16, 2015

Calgary-based geoLOGIC systems ltd. is continuing its support for NAIT with a gift-in-kind donation.

“geoLOGIC systems is committed to supporting the future generations of the energy sector,” says Lauren Parker, marketing and events lead for geoLOGIC. “We believe supporting post-secondary institutions is crucial to the development and growth of a responsible and successful community.”

Over the next three years, geoSCOUT - the company’s leading software - will be available for use by students in the Geological Technology and Petroleum Engineering Technology programs. The software enables learners and users to retrieve, analyze, display and report on oil well activity and history, quickly and accurately.

Larry Boisvert, associate chair of the programs at NAIT, has worked closely with geoLOGIC, and since 2005, has integrated geoSCOUT software into the Applied Stratigraphy course, which focuses on oil well prospecting and data evaluation.

He recalls the bygone days of manually retrieving geophysical logs and mapping well information related to Alberta’s oil and gas industry, “It would take weeks. That all changed with technology like geoSCOUT.”

Boisvert has also seen first-hand how learning to use the software creates opportunities for students. “Acquiring the hands-on experience with software that is used widely in the field today is invaluable to our students, and quite often gives them an advantage when it’s time to look for a job.”

Geological and petroleum engineering technologists are among the most in-demand professions in Alberta.

“Our programs are highly industry driven to prepare graduates with relevant skill-sets,” says Faisal Arain, associate dean of NAIT’s school of sustainable building and environmental management. “The donation of geoLOGIC software endorses industry’s trust in our programs and strengthens our capability to meet their needs.”

In fall 2016, students in both programs will be some of the first to study in the Centre of Applied Technology, currently under construction on NAIT’s Main Campus. The centre is the largest capital project in NAIT’s 53-year history.

To raise additional financial support for the centre, in addition to applied research and student support initiatives, Essential: The NAIT Campaign was launched in November 2015. geoLOGIC systems ltd. is one of NAIT’s supporters that will help reach its $100 million fundraising goal.
