The EMEND project is located in the boreal mixedwood forest 90 kilometres north of Peace River, Alberta. It is a large-scale variable retention harvest experiment designed to test effects of residual forest structure on ecosystem integrity and forest regeneration at the forest stand level.
A long-term project, EMEND began in 1998 and is forecast to run for one stand rotation, or approximately 80–100 years. The project, centred at the University of Alberta, is a collaboration of several research agencies, provincial and federal governments, and forest companies operating in northwest Alberta.
EMEND has engaged an information service through its EMEND Insights series, formerly known as Research Notes. These research bulletins keep industry and practitioners knowledgeable about leading -edge findings and how they can be implemented on the landscape and regularly feature a research project, often by graduate students or PhD candidates, along with management implications of the research. The target audience for these reports is the forestry and oil and gas sector.
